Absolute absence cannot remain absolutely absent
Every theory of time eventually encounters the same question: what existed before time began?
The question itself appears paradoxical because the word before already presupposes the existence of time. If time originates together with the Universe, then no temporal sequence can precede its emergence. Nevertheless, the question remains philosophically meaningful. It asks not what happened before time, but what ontological condition made the emergence of time possible.
Throughout this work, time has been interpreted as a measure of becoming, the realization of possibilities, and the ordering of informational change. If these interpretations are correct, then possibility must be more fundamental than time itself. Time cannot generate possibilities because every temporal process already presupposes alternative future states. Rather, possibility constitutes the ontological domain from which time eventually emerges.
The traditional answer to this question invokes Nothing. Before creation, there was Nothing. Yet this immediately raises another difficulty. Can absolute Nothing truly exist?
At first glance, Nothing appears to be the simplest conceivable state. It contains no matter, no energy, no space, no time, no laws, and no distinctions. It is the complete absence of being. However, precisely because of this absolute simplicity, Nothing becomes philosophically unstable.
To exist as absolute Nothing, Nothing must perfectly coincide with itself. It must possess complete ontological self-identity. Yet complete self-identity is itself a form of determination. To say that Nothing is perfectly identical to itself already attributes to it a definite ontological status. Absolute Nothing therefore acquires a subtle contradiction: it must simultaneously be entirely indeterminate while remaining perfectly determined as Nothing.
Within the Infinous framework, this contradiction may be described as ontological tension.
Ontological tension is not a force, an energy, or a physical process. It is the impossibility of perfect coincidence between absolute indeterminacy and actual existence. One may distinguish between Infinite Nothing and Actual Nothing. Infinite Nothing represents complete indeterminacy, unlimited by any form or distinction. Actual Nothing, by contrast, is Nothing realized as an ontological condition. The transition between these two concepts cannot be perfectly complete because realization itself introduces determination.
Nothing therefore never remains entirely pure.
It continuously approaches itself without ever becoming perfectly identical to itself.
This tension should not be understood temporally. There is no succession, no duration, and no change in the ordinary sense because time has not yet emerged. The tension is purely ontological. It expresses the logical incompleteness of absolute non-being.
One may compare this situation to an unstable mathematical equilibrium. A perfectly balanced point is conceivable in theory, yet the slightest deviation transforms equilibrium into motion. Likewise, absolute Nothing represents an ideal limit that cannot remain perfectly realized. Its very attempt at complete self-identity generates the first ontological distinctions.
These distinctions should not yet be understood as particles, fields, or even quantum fluctuations in the physical sense. Rather, they represent the earliest informational asymmetries—the minimal differences that make determination possible. Reality acquires its first distinctions before it acquires space, time, or matter.
The distribution of these primordial distinctions may be regarded as the deepest foundation of possibility.
Possibility therefore precedes time.
Before events can occur, there must already exist differences capable of becoming events. Before causality can operate, there must already exist distinguishable configurations from which causal relations may emerge. Before duration can be measured, there must already exist informational asymmetries capable of generating ordered transformations.
Time appears only when these primordial distinctions become sufficiently organized to produce stable sequences of realization.
In this sense, time does not originate with the first event alone. It originates with the first persistent ordering of possibilities.
This interpretation offers a different understanding of cosmological fluctuations. Modern cosmology often attributes the origin of structure to quantum fluctuations within the primordial vacuum. Such fluctuations explain how an initially almost homogeneous Universe eventually produced galaxies, stars, and planets. The Infinous framework does not attempt to replace this physical description. Instead, it asks a more fundamental question: why should fluctuations exist at all?
The proposed answer is that perfect ontological equilibrium is impossible.
Absolute Nothing cannot completely preserve its own indeterminacy. Its internal ontological tension inevitably produces informational asymmetries from which physical fluctuations later emerge. Quantum fluctuations therefore become not the ultimate beginning but the first physical manifestation of a deeper informational instability.
This perspective also sheds light on the relationship between possibility and probability. Possibility belongs to the pre-temporal ontological domain. It defines everything that may consistently exist. Probability appears only after stable informational structures emerge and alternative realizations become comparable. Probability therefore presupposes time, whereas possibility does not.
One may therefore distinguish three successive ontological levels. The first is pure possibility, characterized by primordial informational distinctions but no temporal order. The second is the emergence of ordered realization, where stable sequences generate the phenomenon of time. The third is historical reality, in which realized possibilities accumulate as information and memory.
Within the Infinous framework, the Universe is not created from absolute Nothing in the traditional sense. Rather, it emerges from the impossibility of absolute Nothing maintaining complete ontological purity. Reality begins when possibility becomes structured, when primordial informational distinctions acquire coherence, and when coherent realization gives rise to temporal order.
Time is therefore not the first principle of existence.
Possibility is.
Time is the architecture through which possibility progressively becomes reality.
The deepest beginning of the Cosmos is not the first moment of time but the first ontological distinction from which time itself could eventually emerge.
