Albert Einstein once remarked that “the concept of a periodic process precedes the concept of time.” This observation points toward a profound truth: before we measure time, we recognize recurrence.
Nearly everything we observe in nature is cyclical. Day follows night. Seasons return. Civilizations rise and fall. Creation emerges from destruction, and every birth carries within it the inevitability of death. Even the most stable structures eventually dissolve, giving rise to new forms. Change itself appears to follow recurring patterns.
The cosmos is no exception. Stars are born from vast clouds of gas and dust, shine for millions or billions of years, and eventually die. Yet from the remnants of exploded stars, new generations of stars emerge. Galaxies evolve through cycles of formation, collision, and renewal. The universe itself, having begun in the Big Bang, may one day reach an ending that serves as the beginning of another cosmic epoch.
Modern Cosmism extends this idea even further. It imagines that sufficiently advanced civilizations may eventually participate in cosmic creation itself, engineering artificial singularities capable of generating entirely new universes. In such a vision, intelligence becomes an active participant in the cycle of cosmic renewal.
The notion of cyclical time appears throughout the world’s religious traditions, but nowhere is it developed more systematically than in Hindu philosophy and Buddhism.
The Bhagavad Gita presents Time as both creator and destroyer. Everything emerges through Time, and everything eventually returns through Time. Time is not merely duration; it is the universal rhythm through which existence unfolds.
In Hindu cosmology, a day in the life of Brahma—the creator deity—is known as a Kalpa. During this immense cycle, countless worlds emerge like bubbles rising from an infinite ocean. With the arrival of Brahma’s night, these worlds dissolve. Creation withdraws into an unmanifest state known as Pralaya. The cosmos does not cease to exist completely; rather, it returns to a condition of pure potentiality, awaiting the next cycle of manifestation.
An intriguing philosophical question emerges from this narrative. Does Brahma awaken because a new cosmic day begins, or does the cosmic day begin because Brahma awakens? In other words, is consciousness the source of time, or is time more fundamental than consciousness?
The question remains relevant even in contemporary philosophy and physics.
According to Hindu tradition, Brahma himself eventually dies after an unimaginably long lifespan. This event is called Mahapralaya—the Great Dissolution. Entire universes, cosmic hierarchies, and creators disappear. Yet even here, nothing is completely lost. Existence withdraws into the body of Maha-Vishnu, remaining in an unmanifest state until a new cycle begins.
Remarkably, this ancient idea resembles modern notions concerning the conservation of information. Just as contemporary physics increasingly suggests that information cannot be completely destroyed, Hindu cosmology proposes that reality enters a dormant state rather than vanishing absolutely.
From the perspective of Infinous, Mahapralaya can be interpreted as the completion of a great cycle of Being.
At the end of such a cycle, reality approaches a state that appears almost indistinguishable from Nothingness. Structures dissolve. Distinctions fade. Space loses its form. Time loses its familiar meaning. Yet the informational essence of existence remains preserved in a latent state.
Imagine standing beneath a vast night sky during a city-wide celebration. Fireworks erupt across the horizon in every direction. Each explosion is unique and beautiful. Each sparkling burst may be imagined as a universe. Every glowing particle within those fireworks may represent an entire multiverse. Together they form a magnificent display of Being against the infinite darkness of Nothingness.
Eventually, however, the fireworks begin to fade.
The bursts become smaller. The intervals between them grow longer. The sky darkens. The spectacle gradually approaches silence.
For a brief moment, almost nothing remains.
The sky appears completely empty.
Yet this apparent emptiness is not truly empty. It contains the possibility of every future firework.
Likewise, cosmic dissolution may not be the destruction of existence but its return to pure possibility.
Within the Infinous framework, cyclical time should not be understood as the simple repetition of identical events. The universe is not trapped in an endless loop replaying the same history. Rather, cycles function as mechanisms of informational renewal.
Every cycle preserves certain informational structures while generating new possibilities. The next universe is not a copy of the previous one. It is an evolution of it.
In this sense, time resembles a spiral more than a circle.
Each revolution returns to familiar themes while simultaneously advancing into unexplored territory.
Stars are reborn, but not the same stars.
Civilizations arise again, but not the same civilizations.
Minds emerge, but not the same minds.
Universes return, but not the same universes.
The cycle therefore becomes a process of cosmic learning.
Reality repeatedly explores its own possibilities, accumulating informational complexity across successive generations of existence. Biological evolution, cultural evolution, technological evolution, and perhaps even cosmological evolution become manifestations of the same underlying principle.
From this perspective, Absolute Time may be linear, carrying reality toward ever-greater complexity, while physical universes experience local cycles of birth, growth, decline, dissolution, and rebirth.
The deepest form of time is therefore neither purely linear nor purely cyclical.
It is evolutionary.
Reality does not merely repeat itself. It remembers, transforms, and transcends itself.
Every ending becomes the informational seed of a new beginning.
Every cosmic death becomes an act of preparation for a future creation.
And every cycle carries existence one step closer to understanding the infinite possibilities contained within itself.
